This Bette Davis comedy teams her with George Brent as lovers and rival newshounds: she writes the agony column for The Star but wants to prove herself as a reporter; he has established himself on the rival paper The Express and disapproves strongly of women becoming reporters. When both are sent to cover a major fire, the scene is set. The outcome is inevitable, but not before the plot has twisted itself this way and that, largely avoiding credibility, but providing plenty of witty lines along the way. The prolific and versatile Michael Curtiz directs and Davis is a delight in her feisty role. The Front Page this film is not, but it's pleasant comedy entertainment nonetheless.
