The Last Hurrah

Spencer Tracy based the role of a vote-hunting mayor on Boston's controversial city hall incumbent Jim Curley. A champion of the poor (especially if they happen to be Irish), he's happy to take backhanders - a policy that hasn't endeared him to big business and the church. An engaging political drama from veteran director John Ford.

The Last Hurrah Based on the career of Boston's controversial Irish-American mayor Jim Curley, a role that enables Spencer Tracy to dominate the rest of the cast, this John Ford film is an overlong but still strong political saga. Tracy is surrounded by a veritable council of distinguished veteran stars, among them Basil Rathbone, Pat O'Brien, Donald Crisp, Ricardo Cortez, James Gleason and John Carradine.
