Quirkily fantastic Hollywood version of Shakespeare's play, with Mickey Rooney a quicksilver Puck, James Cagney a truculent Bottom, Victor Jory a splendidly forbidding Oberon and Dick Powell a delightfully miscast Lysander. Anita Louise and Olivia de Havilland (as Titania and Hermia) were just about Hollywood's prettiest young actresses at the time, but the real star of the film is Hal Mohr's glistening, mystical black and white camerawork - a deserved Academy Award winner that makes a sinister fairyland out of the woodland settings.
