Frantic, fast-paced, outrageous comedy written and directed by Preston Sturges, with lunatic sub-plots going off everywhere.
Betty Hutton was never funnier than as Trudy Kockenlocker, pregnant in wartime by a vanished soldier husband whose name she recalls vaguely as Ratzkiwatzki; the family of Kockenlockers discussing the unlikelihood of the name Ratzkiwatzki is itself hilarious.
William Demarest is a tower of bewilderment as her father, Diana Lynn delightfully brattish as her kid sister and Eddie Bracken a riotously twitching rag doll as the idiot who loves her from afar (though not far enough for Trudy's liking).
The amazing ending creased wartime audiences and still looks funny today.
