This interesting failure, co-written by star Deborah Raffin, tries to tie too many different films into one package. Starting as an oddball drama about a 'crazy' reclusive widow who advertises for a new husband, it shifts sideways into a gentle, then steamy love story, then stops, starting again as a murder yarn which develops into a courtroom thriller, shedding credibility all the way. Rather flashily and soppily directed by Steven Stern, the films ends as a malformed coffee-table soap opera. Christopher Reeve and Raffin give it their best shot, but don't quite have the dramatic weight the story requires to pull it off. J T Walsh, though, is as shifty and sleazy as ever as the probably-corrupt local sheriff.
