A skilfully done, wistful piece of Americana from undervalued director Theodore J Flicker which carries echoes of Nashville, Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (strangely Karen Black, star of this, was in both) and even Cheers in its quietly effective account of a morning-to-afternoon small-town bar and its assorted collection of regulars, mostly bored housewives. Character star Earl Holliman, best remembered as Angie Dickinson's co-star in the Police Woman series, enjoys one of his best roles as the guy who runs the bar and provides a shoulder to cry on. .
