Even the best of 'em have their off-days. Witness (or maybe not) this James Stewart vehicle, where he stars as Major Baldwin, who has to blow up a key bridge in World War Two, heartlessly ousting many Chinese people when he's ordered to stop the Japanese advancing in East China. Stewart often delivered a fine performance cast against type (and character) as a bad guy, but not here. The part he's playing is just too alienating to allow you to care and Stewart is betrayed by a stolid, uninteresting script and boring direction. Maybe a curio, though, as a rarely shown Stewart movie.
