Bette Davis plays another in her gallery of lonely spinsters, lit up by meeting a man - in this case a then young and hunky Jim Davis (later of Dallas fame). No wonder her poetess's faint heart starts beating faster at the sight of big Jim's navy uniform - and him a war hero too! Conflict comes in a very unexpected way - Jim wants to become a priest. So what's a girl to tell him to do? This movie is every bit as waffly and often downright embarrassing as it sounds - but Bette, in her great prime, triumphs over it all like a stately galleon in full sail.
