Sherwood Forest 20 years after, and it's a land of mud and grime, but the wicked sheriff (Robert Shaw) is still oppressing the peasants, as Robin Hood (Sean Connery) and Little John return from the Crusades to find Maid Marian (Audrey Hepburn) cloistered in a nunnery. The realist style, coupled with surrealist comic touches, leaves an attractive film struggling to find a rhythm. But Connery and Hepburn (in her first film for nine years) are very touching, Nicol Williamson's Little John is appealing. and the Connery-Shaw final battle is pulsating stuff. The makers wanted Albert Finney to play Robin and Sean Connery to play Little John.
