Not the first time that the house of Hammer had dabbled in Dennis Wheatley's diabolic books, but fortunately the last, in this resistible mix of revulsion and laughter. Devil's child Nastassja Kinski arrives in London courtesy of head satanist Christopher Lee, and is soon causing no end of trouble for her friends. Honor Blackman gets it in the neck (with a steel comb) for not looking after her, and Anthony Valentine gets all burnt up about her. Only trusty old Richard Widmark, displaying commendable conviction, is left to save the girl from being baptised in blood and becoming the devil herself, although why Widmark thought her worth saving we can't say. Director Peter Sykes achieves one or two nice images of monks boating mysteriously across the lake, but it all seems a bit daft. Kinski is well cast in the pivotal role, though - a beguiling mix of innocence and malevolence.
