A picturesquely set Technicolor Western from the middle of director Anthony Mann's best period of work. Stars James Stewart and Ruth Roman have to give second-best to Walter Brennan (another of his grizzled, gabby sidekicks), Corinne Calvet, as a winsome French-Canadian spitfire, and John McIntire as the top-hatted villain. Solid value for fans of both Stewart and the Western, and bliss for fans of Hollywood character actors. Besides Brennan and McIntire, such solid westerners as Steve Brodie, Robert J Wilke, Henry Morgan, Jack Elam, Kathleen Freeman and Royal Dano all strut their stuff. Like the hero, it's a bit slow to catch fire, but there's a grand shoot-out at the end.
