One doesn't expect much from Hollywood films with titles like this, but the presence of William Powell (as a dapper con-man) and Bette Davis (as a devious designer) alerts you to the fact that there may be more than a parade of gowns on display here. And so it proves. An accompanying story of industrial chicanery is decked out with dance spectacle from Busby Berkeley, a witty script that allows room for a rollicking performance from Verree Teasdale as a fake duchess, a lively story and sophisticated good humour. Powell is at his most debonair, and even Frank McHugh is more bearable than usual as an enterprising photographer who carries a miniature camera in the handle of his cane.
