Despite the fact that it formed a major film-starring debut for Danny Thomas, this Warners musical about the life and times of popular lyricist Gus Kahn, surprisingly shot in black and white, leans heavily on the talents of Doris Day (playing Kahn's wife) for its effect. As well as selling such standards as Ain't We Got Fun, The One I Love Belongs to Somebody Else, I'll See You In My Dreams, Makin' Whoopee, Love Me or Leave Me and Pretty Baby, Day's personality (and acting) gives the film a warmth it probably otherwise wouldn't possess.
