Bette Davis' first film following her great courtroom battles with Warner Brothers over her contract actually has her in a courtroom as a 'night-club hostess' who has to decide whether or not to keep quiet about a murder. The film was actually based on the real-life case of racketeer Lucky Luciano who was prosecuted by a district attorney with the help of Luciano's own prostitutes. The attorney here is played by Humphrey Bogart, in a rare sympathetic role, while Luciano, here called Johnny Vanning, is viciously incarnated by Eduardo Ciannelli. Bogart's then-wife Mayo Methot is another of the girls.
