A bright, breezy backstage musical which gave James Cagney his first song-and-dance role after his great success in Yankee Doodle Dandy. The plot is the old stand-by about the two partners who come together again. But a star-studded cast, including Doris Day (in one of her very early musical roles), Gene Nelson, Virginia Mayo and Gordon MacRae, does it more than justice. The director is Roy Del Ruth, former Sennett gag writer, who cut his teeth on such Thirties musicals as Kid Millions, Broadway Melody of 1936 and On the Avenue. A pity it's in black and white, but you can't have everything: this is one of the few old movies that actually would benefit from being colourised.
