Former child star Jackie Cooper lets melodrama have its head as the director of this tall tale of a weary widow who fosters a black 16-year-old (unfortunately played by an actor who looks more like 23) in a rundown section of an American city. You may detect elements of Pinocchio in the story that follows, culminating in a boxing match of the purest fiction. Bette Davis treads gingerly round the role of the red-eyed widow and there's room for the Oscar-winning Eileen Heckart to make a rare screen appearance as the `bag lady' (the American term for a female urban tramp) who befriends her. Watch for the misspelling of the word `shepherd' on a church's name-board.
