Julien Duvivier's elegant version of Tolstoy's novel, immortalised in two film versions by Garbo (Love in 1927 and, the more famous Anna Karenina in 1935). Vivien Leigh makes a wistful doomed heroine and Ralph Richardson is in cuttingly splendid form as her cuckolded husband. Attention to detail in costumes and settings is immaculate, and the camerawork of distinguished French cinematographer Henri Alekan achieves some fine effects in black and white. It did not, however, restore the fortunes of its producer, the famous Alexander Korda, to their pre-war glory.
