Arthur Penn, who later made 'Bonnie and Clyde' and 'Little Big Man', treads a gory, brutal path in this high-powered look at the warped, evil inhabitants of an American town, and the comparatively clean convict on the run they seek to destroy. Although basically unbelievable, the film remains holding throughout, extremely well made and quite beautifully photographed in colour, especially in one scene where an escaped prisoner runs across an irrigated field at sunset. The acting is often very good, particularly from James Fox, getting an amazingly natural American accent for a British actor. And Richard Bradford, once of TV's 'Man in a Suitcase', has his biggest film role as the kill-crazy Damon. Others in a powerhouse cast include Marlon Brando, Jane Fonda, Robert Redford, Miriam Hopkins, Martha Hyer, Robert Duvall, Janice Rule, Angie Dickinson, Bruce Cabot and veteran character actor Henry Hull.
