This murder-by-contract thriller moves at a frantic pace and provides an interesting role for Van Johnson, who toughens his old image considerably to play a harried but determined police chief. Clu Gulager is also in good form as a waspish reporter, and the film marks the last screen appearance of Diana Lynn, the bouncy teenager of so many top comedies of the late Forties. A year later she died from a stroke, at the age of 45. Very clear Technicolor photography adds impact to the action scenes. Intended originally for TV, but shown only in cinemas.
