Supposedly the film that led to the final break between Bette Davis and Warner Brothers, this melodrama, cleverly described by one critic as `fiercely trashy', looks a whole lot better today. Directed at too slow a pace by King Vidor with one eye on symbolism and another on the intensity of the Davis performance, it has a European feel, tensions and innuendoes galore, a classic Davis line in `What a dump! ' and a sensational ending. Davis fans will love it.
