A typical John Ford Western, with splendid scenery, and an explosive conflict between two big men - John Wayne as a tough Union colonel leading a mission into enemy territory and William Holden as an army surgeon who disagrees with his methods. In supporting roles, two interesting Gibsons. There's Althea, one-time Wimbledon tennis champion, in her only film role, and old-time cowboy star Hoot. And those reliable western character actors Strother Martin and Denver Pyle play two disreputable deserters. Some effective action scenes are topped by a frighteningly-well realised street siege.
