One of the funniest Hollywood light comedies since the glossy, brittle romps of the late Thirties. The scene where James Stewart gets stuck, while trying to get the 'phone and claim a huge quiz prize, matches anything he ever did in the world of comic cinema. The supporting cast is studded with rib-tickling performances, from old comedy hands Fred Clark and James Gleason, to a 12-year-old Natalie Wood as Stewart's precocious daughter. Stewart himself suffers exquisite agonies, especially when the prizes turn up, a white elephant every one. After all, what does one do with a giant steer carcass, or a three-year supply of frozen food (all at once)? To say nothing of the embarrassment inflicted by a twee interior decorator (superbly snooty Alan Mowbray) or an artist (glamorous Patricia Medina) commissioned to paint Stewart's portrait. The resulting chaos is hilarious.
