Lively Western in good Technicolor, with Glenn Ford in a very different role from his other co-starring Western with William Holden, Texas, in 1941. Here he plays an army officer with a streak of brutal violence, who is made a federal judge, and clashes with Holden, as his oldest friend. Ford does well as the totally dislikeable Devereaux, and the supporting cast is filled with Columbia regulars. They include chubby Edgar Buchanan (who had also appeared in Texas); lean-featured Jim Bannon, who starred in the Red Ryder Western series; fresh-faced Jerome Courtland, who later turned director with the Disney studio; benevolent Ray Collins, who went on to win fame as Lt Tragg in the Perry Mason series on television; and character actor Denver Pyle.
