Marlon Brando's one-man-band film: this striking-looking Western, spectacularly shot along the California coastline, was to have been director Stanley Kubrick's movie, but when he abandoned it, its producer-star, Brando, got the chance to direct his first, and only, movie. In one of his best roles, he stars as a bank-robbing bandit vengefully hunting down the former criminal partner-turned-sheriff (Karl Malden) who betrayed him and landed him in the slammer for five years. . Despite being cut down from four hours, the film is still a stirring and satisfying Western classic, with Brando in charismatic mood as the grim and masochistic hero and Malden on prime form cast against type as his evil antagonist Look also for telling portrayals from Katy Jurado, Slim Pickens as a deputy sheriff and Elisha Cook Jr as a frightened bank cashier. FACT: It was Mexican actress Pina Pellicer's only Hollywood film: she committed suicide three years later at 29.
