Irving Rapper, who directed Bette Davis on two of her other great Forties hits, Now, Voyager and Deception, helps her to give another telling performance in this fine adaptation of Emlyn Williams' famous play. John Dall, looking too old, yet seeming inexperienced in the acting department, is less winning as the Welsh miner whom Bette coaches to get into Oxford University. You may think some of this is, indeed, corny, but it still exerts a strong hold, thanks more to the enduring power of Davis's formidable performance than a slightly faded play. You can really believe the old broad when she states: 'I've never talked to a man for more than five minutes without wanting to box his ears.' Blustering Nigel Bruce has some fine combative moments as the mine owner and Rhys Williams, who plays Mr Jones, also acted as technical adviser on the film. Made again with Katharine Hepburn in 1979.
