A remarkable example of how to transform a trite story from within by sheer force of acting personality. Bette Davis, Paul Henreid and Claude Rains, three of Warners' glittering little stock company of stars, never earned their keep more than on this screenplay about a dark romance in the world of music, which perhaps would never have got off the ground in today's cinematic climate. The result was such absorbing entertainment that, as one contemporary critic put it: 'I wouldn't have missed it for the world.'
