One of John Huston's most bizarre ventures. Marlon Brando gives one of the more interesting of his latter performances as the repressed- homosexual soldier whose wife has to turn to another officer (Brian Keith) for affection. Elizabeth Taylor is beautifully cast as Brando's desirable but insensitive wife. Huston also picked two newcomers for his cast - New York hairdresser Zorro David, as Miss Taylor's Filipino houseboy, and untried actor Robert Forster as another soldier to whom Brando finds himself attracted. Although neither has made much impact since, both proved excellent in their roles. Huston confessed himself angered by the studio's refusal to carry out his original plan to desaturate the print to a duotone of pinks and golds - but he did use severely under-exposed stock, giving the picture the dull sepiatone look of an old photograph. A weird, unpleasant and disturbing film.
