Two Oscar-winning actresses, Bette Davis and Kim Hunter, vie for acting honours in this, the first of Davis's 'character' films after her return to the screen in the mid-Fifties. Here, in a role at one time mooted for a Mary Pickford comeback, Davis is a librarian asked to remove a controversial book from her shelves. It was the first (and last) film to be directed by Daniel Taradash, who already had an Oscar under his belt for the screenplay of From Here To Eternity. This script was nowhere near as good and, despite the efforts of the cast, the turgid tale deservedly died at the box-office. Pickford was probably right to remain in retirement.
