Co-scripted by Raymond Chandler, this is a rollercoaster ride of tension, excitement and sudden shocks from Alfred Hitchcock. Full of memorable images, it marked the suspense master's return to form after a few indifferent films and has Robert Walker gleefully creating an extravagant killer who hatches a bizarre, psychopathic scheme to 'swap' murder victims with an understandably bemused Farley Granger. The locations are chosen with Hitchcock's customary care in this brilliantly taut adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel and the climactic chase through a fairground is a triumph of photography, editing and direction. A murder seen reflected in a pair of glasses is also a stunning photographic and directorial coup.
