Despite the occasional artificial backdrop, location filming at Lake Tahoe lends a fresh, breezy feel to the old story (first seen on stage in 1924) about the backwoods singer (in this version a Canadian opera star) and the Mountie who gets his woman. Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, then the screen's hottest romantic singing team, were surefire box-office in these roles. But there's additional interest for film buffs today in early appearances by James Stewart (as the heroine's villainous brother! ), singer Allan Jones (who would rise to fully-fledged co-star with Miss MacDonald in 'The Firefly') and a very young-looking David Niven (billed as Nivens). It couldn't miss and it didn't: MGM made a mint.
