Alfred Hitchcock rejoins Ingrid Bergman for a plush Aussie-set 1830s period thriller with surefire elements like a creepy housekeeper, a skeleton in the cupboard and a confession of guilt at the climax. Both Bergman (as an aristocratic Irish girl! ) and co-star Joseph Cotten (as the ex-criminal Irishman who she marries) are totally miscast. Yet, even so, the stars shine and Margaret Leighton is outstanding as the housekeeper. Wearing well and even improving with age, Hitch's film is wonderfully romantic and Jack Cardiff's Technicolor photography makes it an object of beauty. Unusually, Hitch has two cameo appearances in this one: after about five minutes he appears in the town square wearing a coat and a brown hat and 10 minutes later he is one of three men on the steps of Government House.
