A delicate piece of romantic whimsy, this was too fragile and charming for the wartime public, who stayed away in droves. But the grace and tact of the playing from Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart now grows more attractive with the years. Twisting and turning, the tale of shy people and unlikely misunderstandings is kept spinning along at a great pace by the masterly direction of Ernst Lubitsch, amusing us, entertaining us and sometimes touching our hearts.
