Christopher Reeve, in only his second film, is great in the role that rocketed him to superstardom as the Man of Steel. Flying high in the action scenes, he is even better in his subtle turn as Superman's alter-ego Clark Kent. Though the movie develops into predictable comic-strip action after its stunning first 20 minutes, there are enough brilliant special effects and bright sequences to provide slick and satisfying entertainment. Lifting a whopping $4million for 10 minutes as Superman's dad, Marlon Brando didn't even bother to learn his lines - he read it all off cue cards!
