This thriller is not at all typical of its director John Huston or writer Walter Hill (who later directed The Streetfighter and Driver). If is is reminiscent of anything, it's the stories of John Buchan, especially when Paul Newman's cover is blown and he flees from his enemies across the wilder parts of Ireland. A formidable battery of senior British actors - including Harry Andrews, Nigel Patrick, Niall MacGinnis, Roland Culver, Michael Hordern and Leo Genn - contribute cameos if not always conviction in the midst of Hill's studiedly intricate plot.
