This decently crafted, well-acted war film tells of an old destroyer given by the Americans to the British Navy, its martinet skipper (Trevor Howard, excellent), its crew and the difficulties they overcome to weld a fighting partnership. The climax is based on the real St Nazaire raid, when an ancient ship was rammed into a vital Nazi dock.
