Originally called Vanity Fair, but changed to avoid confusion with the noval by William Makepeace Thackeray, this silent comedy, Charlie Chaplin's penultimate short-length film, features him not only in his famous 'tramp' guise, but also as a high-society drunk. It's never clear which side of the coin is intended to represent the idle class of the title... but no matter. Watch out for the teenager playing Edna Purviance's maid. Her name was Lita Grey and three years later she became Chaplin's second wife.
