When the crew of a damaged submarine in a film say 'We'll be all right for a day and a half', and the captain replies 'We won't be down here that long', you can bet your last fathom they're in trouble. With Charlton Heston at the conning-tower, the producers obviously figured out that this film had to be an epic of some sort. So they made it an epic of suspense. There are some tellingly harrowing moments, and the film is quite well made. Christopher Reeve makes his screen debut as one of the rescuers.
