Sincere and well-acted version of a Graham Greene novel, with the seething atmosphere of West Africa in 1942 well captured, and Trevor Howard outstanding as the deputy police commissioner whose concern for the underdog has him lurching towards self-destruction. He heads an excellent cast, but director George More O'Ferrall's respectful treatment of the material makes it all a shade dull.
