Here's a chance to re-evaluate one of Frank Capra's two Bing Crosby films.
Both this and the other, Riding High, mix sentiment, comedy and songs, the hit number in this one being In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening by Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer, which won an Academy Award.
Also popular was Misto Cristofo Columbo which Bing sings on a plane, accompanied by numerous guest 'passengers', including Louis Armstrong, Cass Daley, Phil Harris and Dorothy Lamour. Crosby was reported to have been highly elated when asked to make the first film with Capra, Riding High.
The two men, both fanatical golfers, were personal friends and welcomed the chance to work together, even if Bing was not quite the same type as Gary Cooper and James Stewart, who had starred so successfully for Capra in previous pictures.
In a wedding scene in church, you may spot a number of silent comedy veterans (including Jimmy Finlayson and Chester Conklin) who had been especially gathered together by Capra for the occasion.
