Paul Muni received top billing but the dramatic garlands were easily snatched from him by Bette Davis. She gives a spirited, no-holds-barred performance as the wife of bordertown casino owner Eugene Pallette, whom she murders to clear the way for her amorous pursuit of Muni. She succeeds, too, in overcoming Archie Mayo's somewhat flabby direction. The film served as the basis for 1940's 'They Drive By Night', with Ida Lupino just as good in the reworked Davis role.
