Paramount launched their Bulldog Drummond series of the late Thirties with this film. In later adventures, Ray Milland, who moved on to bigger things, and Sir Guy Standing, who died the year this film was made, were replaced by John Howard and John Barrymore, while Heather Angel and Reginald Denny (who plays Algy) stayed on. This adventure is fast-moving, atmospheric and lively (thanks to the direction of James P Hogan, whose early death in 1943 cut short an undervalued career), with a charasmatic, debonair performance from Milland in the lead. And Heather Angel, another British-born player, proves a refreshingly spirited heroine.
