Made in collaboration with an actual police missing persons department in New York, this is a typically fast-moving Warners crime story with an amusing last-scene twist. The comedy element works rather better than the drama, which isn't surprising with such expert wisecrackers as Glenda Farrell, Allen Jenkins and Ruth Donnelly in the cast. Bette Davis is the icing on the cake, even if she hadn't yet hit her stride at Warners. Here she tackles a role similar, but in a lighter vein, to the one she played three years later in Satan Met a Lady - one of several film versions of The Maltese Falcon.
