This lively musical about a pop idol called up for service in the Army is shamelessly aimed at Elvis Presley and casts some satirical shafts in that direction, although most of these were dated even when the film appeared. Janet Leigh, struggling under the handicap of a black wig, still manages to outshine breathy rival Ann-Margret. But the film is completely stolen by tombstone-toothed Paul Lynde, superbly harassed as the father of the small-town girl on whom the idol has chosen to bestow his last civilian kiss. Musically the film is even less successful. Six numbers from the stage show were dropped to the movie's disadvantage; and, while the dance routines are quite snappy, even their bright colours and variegated filters can't veil the fact that there's nothing new about any of them.
