Writer-director Dick Clement and actor Tom Courtenay, who combined to such good effect on Otley, are together again in a not dissimilar but less effective spy comedy-thriller. Clement and his long-time collaborator Ian La Frenais have fashioned an ingenious plot, full of nice little comic flashes, with double agents everywhere and the hero and heroine dodging spies in Scotland in a manner reminiscent of The 39 Steps. Kirk Douglas and the appealing Marlene Jobert both offer attractive performances, but it's sad to see Trevor Howard wasted in an unworthy role and, for all its merits, the caper is never quite credible.
