A crisp screenplay, slick direction and excellent performances from all the featured players elevate this true-life drama above the run-of-the-mill material usually found on the American TV networks. It is a personal triumph for Melissa Gilbert - almost unrecognisable from her years in Little House on the Prairie - in the starring role as a man-mad, materialistic college student who undergoes a conversion to missionary. Her finely honed, sensitive performance is matched by a host of TV regulars: Pamela Bellwood (Dynasty), Rene Enriquez (Hill Street Blues), Mike Farrell (M*A*S*H), and that consummate screen actor Martin Sheen. Director Joseph Sargent stamps an effective semi-documentary feel on this absorbing production, and Joan Baez adds to the atmosphere with four songs.
