This film is rather more mainstream in its approach to its subject than usual. Barry Tubbs is Jeff, a bright, wholesome American boy, who confronts his parents (Marlo Thomas and Martin Sheen) with news of his homosexuality. Director Gilbert Cates, who won an Emmy nomination, handles well the resulting explosion to the family's well ordered existence, but the film is claimed by Marlo Thomas, with a bravura Mother Courage portrayal of a woman coming to terms with her child's sexuality. The script is of an unusually high calibre for this type of social conscience film, made for an American network screening.
