Neil Simon's bitter-sweet comedies were once surefire at the box-office, but since 1980 they have not often crossed the Atlantic; this romantic drama from his prolific pen casts the inimitable Walter Matthau as a grouchy once-famous scriptwriter confronted by a long-forgotten teenage daughter who now `wants to be in pictures'. Ann-Margret is terrific as Matthau's long-suffering girlfriend.
