One of David Janssen's last (and best) performances, in a role which brings out his very differing qualities. Janssen's intimate world-weariness is especially appropriate to the gruff, but tender-hearted detective probing, with the help of a nun (Susannah York, a shade too fashionable), the mysterious death of a priest. It proved a fruitful reunion for Janssen and director Walter Grauman; they had previously worked together in the Sixties on the cult TV series The Fugitive. Grauman is well at home with the San Francisco locale, a familiar stomping ground from his time on The Streets of San Francisco series. Lots of foggy atmosphere highlights a suspenseful climax and, at clearer times of the day, Jack Swain's first-class colour photography makes the most of the scenery. Oscar-winning Kim Hunter makes a rare appearance as York's Mother Superior.
