Samuel Goldwyn's film version of the famous musical about the gambler who falls for the Salvation Army girl retains only Vivian Blaine from the four original Broadway stars and she obliges by stealing every scene she is in.
The individual song hit is undoubtedly Stubby Kaye with Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat.
Marlon Brando is adequate as Sky Masterson, but wouldn't Howard Keel have been better? Frank Sinatra is uneasily cast as Nathan Detroit, although Jean Simmons fits well into the scheme of things as Sky's Salvation Army love, and sings unexpectedly well.
But it's an awkward, off-key film and most of its musical routines are too short.
Frustratingly disappointing.
