Chilling murder drama of the `psychological' school, with Scandinavian principals (of whom two, Max Von Sydow and Liv Ullmann, had been members of the Ingmar Bergman company) and our own Trevor Howard and Rupert ('Maigret') Davies in support. Director Laslo Benedek, who once hit the headlines as director of Marlon Brando's controversial The Wild One, quite effectively builds up an atmosphere of bleak menace.
